Matt Adamson - Spring 2017

Name:  Matt Adamson
Current residence:  Yonkers, NY
Occupation:  Vice President, Total Rewards, Mastercard
Yrs donated or played in tourney:  All of them

Matt has never turned in a scorecard at the KFM Cancer Classic because he has never attended the tournament.  But he is one of a handful of donors that has donated to the tournament every single year.  His fiscal support is matched only by his unwavering dedication to the cause.  KFM Cancer Classic is proud to put the spotlight on Matt.

Do you have a connection in the fight against cancer?
Yes, as I'm sure we all do.  It first hit home with me in college, when a friend and former teammate died at age 19 from Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare cancer that predominantly afflicts teenagers and young adults.  Prior to that "cancer" was just a disease that old people got; Kurt's death made me realize how nasty and non-discriminatory it can really be.

How did you become involved with the KFM Cancer Classic?
Kevin and I attended UD together and I knew we'd be lifelong friends when I first saw his shirtless impression of the Iron Sheik.  Comedic talent like that only comes around once in a generation.  When he started the Cancer Classic in Cincinnati a few years later it sounded like a great cause and, with Kevin leading the way, a cause that would be around for many years to come.

Why do you donate to the KFM Cancer Classic?
It's the best, most direct, and most trustworthy cause I know in the fight against cancer.  And my 2-year old son loves throwing my collection of multi-colored KFMCC golf balls around the house.

What is your most memorable experience at KFM?
In 16 years I've never actually golfed in the Classic.  But one of my favorite days of the year is when I get that packet in mail with updates on that year's event, the records, and how much money Kevin has once again raised in this fight.  Over $270,000 raised directly to fight cancer!  Not bad for a Dayton grad!

Do you have any advice for this year's players at the tournament?
Having tons of fun for a great cause...what more could you ask for?

Sara Musur - Fall 2016

Name: Sarah Musur
Current residence: Chicago, IL
Occupation: IT Quality Assurance
Yrs donated or played in tourney: 10

Sarah has only missed one classic since she first attended and has done more than her fair share of embracing the spirit of KFM.  One year, she came dressed with 3 friends - in full Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costumes - AND they actually brought pizza to share with attendees.  Sarah has made the journey down to Central Illinois from Chicago and has served a most impactful role as she picks up the bacon wrapped dates from Chicago to deliver to the tournament!

Do you have a connection in the fight against cancer?

I volunteer at a camp for children with cancer. Seeing how strong yet innocent these children are really makes you want to crush this disease.

How did you become involved with the KFM Cancer Classic?

Kevin and I became friends years ago.  He invited me to the event, and who can say no to mini golf?!

Why do you donate to the KFM Cancer Classic?

Many people I love and admire have fought cancer, and this is a small way for me to help them with that battle.

What is your most memorable experience at KFM?

After Niles North Teacher, Daniel Horyn passed away from cancer, one of the holes was dedicated to him.  It meant so much that teachers and graduates from different years all came together for a picture as a way to remember and celebrate his life.

Do you have any advice for this year's players at the tournament.
Best thing about this tournament is the Cubbie Award.  You can be the worst and still be a winner. So just have fun!

Dani Hilgenberg - Spring 2016

Current Residence: near Amazing Arcola.
Years donated or played: I believe I have participated in KFM for 2 of last  3 years, hope to be a lifetime member.

Dani was selected for Donor Spotlight because she appeared at the Classic when it first came to Central Illinois and not only attended but did so with style, energy, and with friends!  She exemplifies a good KFM participant who is committed to the cause, has a sense of humor, and has embraced plaid.

Do you have a connection in the fight against Cancer?
I have many connections to cancer...my paternal grandmother lost her battle when I was 1.5 years and my cousin lost her battle a few years ago. Currently, my sister in law is giving cancer every bit of fight she has in her and has for over 4 years. She is a wife and mother of two young kids, 8 and 5 years. The youngest has no memory of her mom being cancer free.

How did you become involved with the KFM Cancer Classic?
I became involved because my childhood friend, David Monahan asked me to. Since seeing him is like spotting Big Foot, I thought it might be great to see what his face looked like and prove to myself that he wasn't just an imaginary friend I had when I was young.

Why do you donate to the KFM Cancer Classic?
I had a blast participating and love the idea of kicking cancer's a$.  Plus I got Dave to wave at me and I think he remembered my name too.  It's great to see so many fun people at the same place that's not the Broomcorn Beer Tent!

What is your most memorable experience at KFM?
My most memorable moment was watching Ryan K jump in the lake after getting a hole in one on the 17th hole. Priceless.

Do you have any advice for players in this year's tournament?
I encourage people of All skill levels to get out and swing that putter...you can still get your name in a newsletter for having the worst score!

JON BUTLER - FALL 2015

Current Residence: Normal, IL
Occupation: Union Business Agent for the Illinois Education Association
Years Donated or Played: 10ish?  I have several T-shirts in my drawer!

Jon is a KFM veteran who made an annual pilgrimage from central Illinois to play in KFM for many years.  He embodies the KFM spirit with his participation in best dressed (sometimes even intentionally), focus on having a good time over having a good score, and his passion for service to others.

Do you have a connection in the fight against cancer?
Unfortunately, we all do.  Most notable for me is my mother who is a breast cancer survivor.

How did you become involved with the KFM Cancer Classic?

I've known Kevin since we were both wee lads...We grew up a block away from each other.  Given that we lived in Arcola, that meant we were likely to be lifetime friends.

Why do you donate to the KFM Cancer Classic?
The hope that I can, in some small way, help find a cure for cancer.

What is your most memorable experience at KFM?

I think it was 2004, when I thought I made an incredible bid for being the "Best Dressed," but lost out (deservedly) to Jim Moeller.  Luckily, my lovely wife Alicia brought home some hardware that year by winning the "Chicago Cub" Award.  I distinctly remember Kevin's mom sighing with relief as she realized that Alicia finished below her on the leader-board!  It was hilarious!

Do you have any advice for this year's players at the tournament?
It's mini-golf...the best shot may not be the most obvious one, so take some chances and hope that they pay off.  Plus, have fun!

LAUREN BENNETT - SPRING 2015

Current Residence: Chicago, IL
Occupation: Account Executive
Years Donated or Played: 4 - plus a bonus ugly sweater party!

Lauren is an enthusiastic part of a large contingent of Notre Dame alums who grew so much it forced organizers to begin honoring the 'Domer Award' for the top score of an ND alum.  Lauren hasn't won that award but her energy merited this donor spotlight.

Do you have a connection in the fight against cancer?
My grandmother is a breast cancer survivor.

How did you become involved with the KFM Cancer Classic?

Andrew Monahan, Kevin's cousin, invited me to the KFMCC a few years ago, and the event has become a favorite summer tradition for our friends. I have been working on my game and hope to take home the Domer Award this year!

Why do you donate to the KFM Cancer Classic?
I know that my donation directly benefits the ACS's work.

What is your most memorable experience at KFM?

I love when the winner is decided in a dramatic playoff! My favorite memory is Kelly Monahan's (almost) legendary run for the title in 2013.

Do you have any advice for this year's players at the tournament
Leave it all on the course... and don't miss the after party!

CASEY CONLIN - WINTER 2014

Current residence:  Arcola, IL
Occupation:  Project Manager
Yrs donated or played in tourney:  Several.  I looked back through the pictures recently and traced my hairline back to the post college level.  Good times.

Casey has been a constant at the Classic and remains a popular fixture at the classic.  His commitment to supporting the cause, attending the event, and his strong performances at the KFM post parties over the years makes him very deserving of the Donor Spotlight.

Do you have a connection in the fight against cancer?
A grandfather and uncle were lost as a result of cancer.  Close friends are fighting cancer on a daily basis.  Also, my aunt is a cancer survivor.  She rocks.

How did you become involved with the KFM Cancer Classic?
Being friends with Kevin as long as I have tends to get a person involved in many interesting activities.  The KFM Cancer Classic is such an honorable event and it's good to be a part of something like this to overshadow some of the other past antics.

Why do you donate to the KFM Cancer Classic?
It's really a good way support the fight against cancer.  Especially if your internet medical license has yet to come through.

What is your most memorable experience at KFM
Bombing in a playoff last year in spectacular fashion.  Most of you were there.

Do you have any advice for this year's players at the tournament?
Have a few drinks, play some put put, and enjoy a good event for a great cause.  If you need costume advice, contact Barry.

DAN MULLEN - FALL 2014

Current Residence: Worthington, OH

Occupation: Executive Recruiter for Cardinal Health

Years Donated: 9 yrs
Years Played: 5 yrs

Dan and wife Sarah have been generous donors to the KFM as well as spirited participants.  Dan recruited friends to attend and reached the winners circle once where he his prized possession was earned.  His deep connections to the fight against cancer and his involvement in the fight have earned him his place in the donor spotlight.

Do you have a connection in the fight against cancer?
Yes.  My mother-in-law, Julie Winland, battled stage 3 ovarian cancer in 2005-2006 and beat it into remission.  My wife, Sarah Winland Mullen, and I have sponsored a hole in her honor for several years since.  Additionally, my very close friend from UD, Kevin Jaketic, lost his battle with brain cancer in 2012.

How did you become involved with the KFM Cancer Classic?
My good friend, Mr. Kevin Monahan, invited us to participate one year and said it was a blast.  Always up for a good time, we accepted the invite.  It wasn't until we participated our first year, though, that we realized just how much of an impact Kevin was making on the fight against cancer.  Throughout the years, we always looked forward to the event as a great way to catch up with old friends and to make an impact.

Why do you donate to the KFM Cancer Classic?
Quite simply, it's an amazing cause.  Kevin has done a tremendous job over the years raising an impressive amount of money and 100% of what is raised goes towards fighting cancer.

What is your most memorable experience at KFM?
That's easy...winning the Rudy Flyer Award in 2006 which was the inaugural year at the very challenging Green at Grant Park in Chicago.  The Dicky V basketball I won (pictured) still sits on my mantle.

Do you have any advice for this year's players at the tournament?
Enjoy the time you spend with your friends & family, remember those who have been affected by this terrible disease, and hit 'em straight!

SHANNON SAUNDERS -

SPRING 2014

Current residence: Marina del Rey, CA

Occupation: Marketing Research/Consulting

Yrs donated or played in tourney:

Probably about 8-10....I'd have to count my golf balls to know for sure

Shannon has been a 'career' KFM participant and has often served in volunteer capacity.  Her consistent participation, stewardship, and commitment to the cause has earned a spot in the Donor Spotlight.

Do you have a connection in the fight against cancer?
I grew up familiar with the cause as my Grandmother would raise money for the American Cancer Society and observing that had quite an influence on me.  However, it wasn't until the last few years where it became more personal as family members have been impacted by cancer.  While one family member's life was cut tragically short by this disease, her fight and her unwavering faith was a testament to others that cancer can take a lot from you, but it can never take your spirit.

How did you become involved with the KFM Cancer Classic?
I have known Kevin Monahan since kindergarten so I'll support anything that involves him acting in a respectable manner.  :)

Why do you donate to the KFM Cancer Classic?
I appreciate that 100% of what I donate goes directly to the American Cancer Society and their support of patients and commitment to research.

What is your most memorable experience at KFM?
One year I managed to get 3 hole-in-ones and still didn't come anywhere close to winning! (which suggests I need to work on consistency)

Do you have any advice for this year's players at the tournament?
I'm not sure you want to take any advice from me!  Just have fun, it's one of my favorite days of the year.

Sonja Zupevec - Winter 2013

Current residence: Chicago, IL

Occupation: Consultant

Yrs donated or played in tourney: I'm not sure - probably each year you had it in Chicago I'd think

Sonja was selected for the donor Spotlight because of her consistent support over many years of the Classic.  Sonja's foursome became a fixture of the Classic and their enthusiasm has only been matched by their graciousness.
Do you have a connection in the fight against cancer?

One of my long-time friends lost her father to cancer a few years ago, and my father-in-law was recently diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer.

How did you become involved with the KFM Cancer Classic?

I met Kevin through Nic Yoder, and began participating in the KFMCC when it moved to Chicago to both have fun with friends and support a great cause.

Why do you donate to the KFM Cancer Classic?

I think it's a great cause, as it affects so many people.  Even a small donation helps to make an impact.
What is your most memorable experience at KFM?

Attempting to play in a downpour in 2010 - we stuck it out and completed the course!

Do you have any advice for this year's players at the tournament?

As I likely won't be able to make the trip down to Champaign, have a great time!
