Eric Downing

Name: Eric Downing

Induction Year: 2024

Category: Embracing the Spirit

Bio: Few have a resume quite like Eric’s when it comes to KFM Cancer Classic legend and lore. Eric boasts hosting the first KFM post party at his apartment in Cincinnati in 2001 (according to Alan Lathrop, this remains ‘arguably the best’ post party). Eric has performed well at subsequent post parties with ‘last man standing’ performances. This includes the time he lost a burdensome game of ‘Credit Card Roulette’ in 2014 and the time he slept in his car in 2017. While he has never won the Travelers Award, cumulatively he may have traveled the most miles of any attendee over the years. On the course, Eric has a rare distinction of winning both Best Dressed and Overall champion (feat shared only with Jim ‘Morals’ Moeller). He won KFM in 2016 and did so while being dressed as Michael Phelps (in a robe adorned with medals). He won best dressed in both 2015 & 2021 and has been consistent in his enthusiasm at and for KFM.

Personal: Eric is a native of Anderson Township, Ohio and proud graduate of the University of Dayton. Eric married his college sweetheart Tracey and they have 4 kids, reside in Union, KY, and host an amazing Christmas party each year. Eric is a rarity in todays World in that he still works for the same company that hired him out of college. He is a Sr. IT Director for Procter & Gamble. Eric has also placed in both the 5k and national sweeping contest at Arcola’s annual Broomcorn Festival.

Eric’s thoughts on Hall of Fame induction:I am incredibly humbled and privileged to be inducted into the KFM Cancer Classic Hall of Fame, joining the ranks of numerous legends who have left an indelible mark on this event. It is an immense honor to stand alongside these remarkable individuals. Their greatness and achievements inspire me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be recognized among such esteemed company.

I had the absolute privilege of witnessing the Cancer Classic sprout from a simple idea to a full-fledged reality. When I discovered that one of the most beloved games would serve as a backdrop for such a noble cause, led by a team of passionate and dedicated individuals, it was like a match made in heaven. I eagerly marched onto the scene of the inaugural event at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, armed with my trusty little putter, ready to take on the world. From the very beginning, the outpouring of support and contributions was awe-inspiring. I'll never forget the heartfelt story shared by the first cancer survivor who spoke to us—it touched our souls. As we wrapped up the day on the course, we felt a collective sense of making the world just a little brighter than the day before. There was never a doubt in my mind that this event would be a resounding success. Beyond the impressive contributions, it's the camaraderie and fellowship that truly demonstrate the power of unity when we come together for a meaningful cause like this. It's proof that we can move mountains and create positive change when we join forces.

Over the past nearly quarter of a century, although I haven't been able to attend every event, I have made it a point to ensure that I sponsor a hole for someone special each year. When I receive a picture of that individual’s name on the sign of their designated hole, I personally write a heartfelt card and send it to the individual for whom that hole is dedicated. This small gesture allows me to convey the immense love and support that surrounds them. In the unfortunate event that the person has passed away, I send the card to their loved ones, extending my condolences. This is the essence of the event—to recognize that there is a strong army standing behind those facing the challenges of cancer, offering unwavering support, and keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.

As the Fight against cancer continues, I am thrilled to take on an even greater role in the Classic. Together, we will persist until we triumph over cancer, eradicating it once and for all!
